Key points
- Eid al-Adha 2027 is expected around 16 May 2027 in Saudi Arabia. In India it usually falls on the same day or a day later, once the moon is sighted.
- It is on 10 Dhul Hijjah, the day after Arafah, while the pilgrims of Hajj are in Mina.
- It remembers Ibrahim (AS), who was ready to sacrifice his son for Allah, and the ram Allah sent in his place.
- If you plan a qurbani, do not cut your hair or nails from the start of Dhul Hijjah until your animal is sacrificed.
Bakrid 2027: the expected date
- 1 Dhul Hijjah 1448: expected around 7 May 2027
- Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah): expected around 15 May 2027 in Saudi Arabia
- Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul Hijjah): expected around 16 May 2027 in Saudi Arabia, and 16 or 17 May in India
- Days of qurbani: 10 to 12 Dhul Hijjah (to the 13th in some schools)
These dates are estimates. The Islamic month starts with the sighting of the new moon, so the final date in your city is announced by the local moon-sighting committee a day or two before.
The story of Eid al-Adha
Ibrahim (AS) saw in a dream that he was sacrificing his son. When he told his son, the boy said, “O my father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, one of the patient” (37:102). As Ibrahim was about to do it, Allah called out to him and sent a great ram to be sacrificed instead (37:107).
The qurbani of Eid remembers that moment of complete trust. The Qur’an reminds us what really matters: “Neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah, but what reaches Him is your taqwa” (22:37).
The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah
- The Prophet ﷺ said there are no days in which good deeds are dearer to Allah than these ten days (Bukhari 969)
- Fast on the Day of Arafah if you are not on Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ said it wipes out the sins of the year before and the year after (Muslim 1162)
- Say the takbir, tahlil and tahmid often: Allahu akbar, La ilaha illallah, Alhamdulillah
- Give charity, read Qur’an, and make du’a for the pilgrims on Hajj
The takbir of Eid
Many Muslims in India say this takbir after every fard prayer from Fajr on 9 Dhul Hijjah to Asr on 13 Dhul Hijjah, and on the way to the Eid prayer.

Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest, and all praise is for Allah.
Reported from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA)
Qurbani: the simple rules
- Who: in the Hanafi school, followed by most Muslims in India, qurbani is wajib on every adult Muslim who has wealth at the nisab level on the days of Eid. Other schools call it a strong sunnah
- Animals: goat or sheep (at least one year old), cow or buffalo (two years), camel (five years). The animal should be healthy, without a clear defect
- Sharing: one goat or sheep counts for one person; a cow, buffalo or camel can be shared by up to seven people (Muslim 1318)
- Time: after the Eid prayer on 10 Dhul Hijjah, until before sunset on the 12th. A sacrifice before the Eid prayer does not count as qurbani
- At the sacrifice: say “Bismillah, Allahu akbar” (Muslim 1966), use a sharp knife, and do not sharpen it in front of the animal
- The meat: it is good to keep one third, give one third to relatives and friends, and one third to the poor
Follow the laws of your state and city on animals and slaughter, use permitted places, keep streets clean, and do not post photos of the sacrifice on social media. Ask a local scholar about your own case.
Eid for the pilgrims on Hajj
Pilgrims do not pray the Eid prayer in Mina. Their 10 Dhul Hijjah is the busiest day of Hajj: the stoning at Jamrat al-Aqabah, the sacrifice, shaving or cutting the hair, and tawaf al-ifadah.
Pilgrims doing Hajj Tamattu or Qiran must offer a sacrifice called the hady (2:196), inside the Haram area. It is usually paid for through the official Saudi sacrifice coupon. If you are going for Hajj with us, ask whether it is included in your package and how to pay for it.
