Key points
- Umrah Mubarak means “a blessed Umrah”. It is a warm congratulation, not a fixed religious formula.
- A greeting many Arabs use is “Taqabbal Allah”: may Allah accept it. Any sincere du’a for acceptance is good.
- Asking a pilgrim to remember you in their du’a is a long tradition. Du’a for each other in absence is praised in Sahih Muslim (2732).
- When they return, welcome them warmly. The Prophet ﷺ said that one Umrah to the next wipes away the sins between them (Bukhari 1773).
What Umrah Mubarak means
Mubarak means blessed. “Umrah Mubarak” wishes the pilgrim a blessed Umrah: that it goes well, and that Allah accepts it. In India people say it before the journey, at the airport, and again when the pilgrim comes home.
It is a custom of kindness, not a fixed sunnah wording. What matters is the du’a behind it.
What to say, and in which language
- English: “Umrah Mubarak! May Allah accept your Umrah and bring you home safely”
- Urdu: “Umrah mubarak ho. Allah qabool farmaye aur khairiyat se wapas laaye”
- Arabic: “Taqabbal Allah” (may Allah accept), or “Umrah maqbulah” (an accepted Umrah), greetings many Arabs use
- To someone back home: “Umrah mubarak, Allah aapki ibadat qabool farmaye”
Asking them to pray for you
Families often hand the pilgrim a list of names for du’a at the Kaaba and in Madinah. There is a narration that the Prophet ﷺ asked Umar (RA), when he set out for Umrah, not to forget him in his du’a, though scholars have graded its chain as weak (Abu Dawud 1498).
The idea itself is sound. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a believer makes du’a for his brother in his absence, the angels say, “And for you the same” (Muslim 2732). So ask them to pray for you, and pray for them too.

- Many bring back Zamzam and dates to share. Accept with thanks, and do not ask for more than they can carry
- Ask about their journey and what moved them most. It keeps the memory alive for them and inspires others
- Help them hold on to good habits they built there: prayer on time, Qur’an, kind words
