Key points

  • Shab-e-Barat is the night before 15 Sha’ban. In 2027 it is expected on the evening of 23 or 24 January in India, once the moon is sighted.
  • Many scholars, especially in South Asia, honour this night based on narrations that Allah forgives many people in it. Others say these narrations are too weak to set special acts.
  • No prayer with a fixed number of rak’ahs or surahs for this night is proven. Night prayer, du’a and seeking forgiveness are good on any night.
  • Sha’ban as a whole is a month the Prophet ﷺ fasted more than any other except Ramadan (Bukhari 1969).

What Shab-e-Barat is

Shab-e-Barat (shab means night, barat is often explained as freedom or release) is the name used in India and Pakistan for the night of the middle of Sha’ban, the month before Ramadan. In Arabic it is called Laylat al-Nisf min Sha’ban.

For many families in India it is a night of prayer at the mosque, du’a for the living and the dead, and visiting the graves of relatives. It also reminds everyone that Ramadan is only two weeks away.

Shab-e-Barat 2027: the expected date

  • 1 Sha’ban 1448: expected around 10 or 11 January 2027 in India
  • Shab-e-Barat (the night before 15 Sha’ban): expected on the evening of 23 or 24 January 2027
  • Ramzan 1448: expected to begin around 8 February 2027 in Saudi Arabia, and a day later in many parts of India

These are estimates. The month begins with the sighting of the new moon, and your local moon-sighting committee announces the final date.

Why many Muslims honour this night

Several narrations say that on the night of the middle of Sha’ban Allah turns to His creation and forgives them, except those who associate partners with Him and those who hold hatred in their hearts. One of them is in Sunan Ibn Majah (1390).

Many scholars, including most Hanafi scholars of South Asia, say these narrations together give the night a real virtue, even if each chain on its own is weak. So they encourage spending part of it in worship, alone or at the mosque, without fixing any special form.

Why some scholars see it differently

Other scholars say that no narration about this night is strong enough to set special acts for it. In their view it is like any other night: you may pray and make du’a, as on every night, but nothing is specially recommended for it.

Both views come from respected scholars. Follow the scholars you trust, and do not make it a reason to argue with family or neighbours.

What everyone agrees on

  • Night prayer, du’a and seeking forgiveness are good on every night, and Allah is near to the one who calls on Him (2:186)
  • No prayer with a fixed number of rak’ahs or a fixed surah for this night is proven from the Prophet ﷺ
  • Fasting in Sha’ban is a sunnah: the Prophet ﷺ fasted more in Sha’ban than in any month except Ramadan (Bukhari 1969). A narration about fasting the 15th alone is very weak, but the 13th, 14th and 15th of every month are a known sunnah fast (Tirmidhi 761)
  • Visiting graves to make du’a for the dead and remember the hereafter is allowed at any time (Muslim 977)
  • Making peace with anyone you have fallen out with is good at all times, and the narrations of this night stress it

Spending the night simply

  • Pray Isha and Fajr with the congregation, and add whatever night prayer you can manage
  • Make du’a for your parents, your family, the Ummah and those who have passed away
  • Read Qur’an, and make a plan for Ramadan: what you want to read, give and change
  • Skip fireworks and loud celebrations. They are dangerous, waste money and disturb neighbours; give that money in charity instead
  • If you plan Ramzan Umrah, Sha’ban is the time to finish your passport and booking

Questions

It is expected on the evening of 23 or 24 January 2027, the night before 15 Sha’ban 1448. The final date depends on the sighting of the Sha’ban moon.
