Key points

  • There is no single fixed dua for the whole Umrah. You can make dua in Urdu, Hindi or any language, at any step.
  • Learn the talbiyah first. Pilgrims say it from the niyyah until they begin tawaf.
  • No fixed dua is needed for each round of tawaf or sa’i. Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, many read “Rabbana atina”.
  • The duas below come from the Qur’an and Sunnah. Ask your scholar if you are unsure about any wording.

Umrah ki dua: what you need to know

Umrah has four main parts: ihram with the niyyah, tawaf, sa’i and cutting the hair. A few short duas and verses are linked to these steps. The rest of the time, you are free to ask Allah for anything, in your own words.

Many printed books give a long dua for each round of tawaf. You may read them, but they are not required. A dua you understand, from the heart, is better than reading quickly from a book.

Before you leave: the travel dua

Read this when you sit in the car, bus or plane at the start of the journey.

  • Safar ki dua: starting the journey

Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.

Glory be to the One who has made this travel easy for us, which we could not have done ourselves. And to our Lord we will surely return.

    Qur’an 43:13–14

At the miqat: niyyah and talbiyah

Wear ihram before the miqat. On the plane from Mumbai, the crew usually announces when you are close to it. Make the niyyah (intention) in your heart. Many pilgrims from India also say it in words.

  • Umrah ki niyat (intention)

Allahumma inni uridul-‘umrata fa-yassirha li wa taqabbalha minni.

O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah. Make it easy for me and accept it from me.

Common wording used in South Asia

  • Or the short form

    Labbayk Allahumma ‘umratan.

Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah.

  • Talbiyah: from the niyyah until tawaf

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. All praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty. You have no partner.

    Sahih al-Bukhari 1549

Men say the talbiyah aloud; women say it softly. Stop the talbiyah when you begin tawaf.

Entering Masjid al-Haram

Enter with your right foot first. When you see the Kaaba for the first time, there is no fixed wording. Take a moment and ask Allah for what matters most to you.

  • Entering the masjid

Bismillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah. Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik.

In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be on the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

    Sahih Muslim 713

Tawaf duas

Tawaf is seven rounds around the Kaaba, starting from the Black Stone. At the start of each round, face the Black Stone, raise your right hand towards it and say the words below. You do not need to touch it in the crowd.

During each round, make dua, recite Qur’an or do dhikr. There is no fixed dua for each round.

  • At the Black Stone, start of each round

    Bismillahi wallahu akbar.

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

  • Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.

    Qur’an 2:201

After tawaf: Maqam Ibrahim and Zamzam

After the seventh round, pray two rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if there is space, or anywhere in the masjid. Then drink Zamzam and make dua. The Prophet ﷺ said that Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.

  • Walking to Maqam Ibrahim

    Wattakhidhu min maqami Ibrahima musalla.

And take the station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.

    Qur’an 2:125

  • Drinking Zamzam

Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi‘an, wa rizqan wasi‘an, wa shifa’an min kulli da’.

O Allah, I ask You for useful knowledge, plentiful provision and healing from every illness.

Reported from Ibn ‘Abbas; any dua is fine

Sa’i duas at Safa and Marwah

Sa’i is seven laps between Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa. On Safa and on Marwah, face the Kaaba, praise Allah and make dua. Between the green lights, men walk a little faster.

  • Reaching Safa the first time

    Innas-safa wal-marwata min sha‘a’irillah. Abda’u bima bada’allahu bih.

Safa and Marwah are among the signs of Allah. I begin with what Allah began with.

    Qur’an 2:158; Sahih Muslim 1218

  • On Safa and Marwah, three times, with your own dua after each

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar.

Allah is the Greatest (three times). There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the kingdom and the praise, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone. He kept His promise, helped His servant and alone defeated the allies.

    Sahih Muslim 1218

  • Between the green lights (optional)

    Rabbighfir warham, innaka antal-a‘azzul-akram.

My Lord, forgive and have mercy. You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous.

    Reported from Companions; not required

Finishing Umrah and leaving the masjid

After sa’i, men shave or shorten the hair and women cut about a fingertip’s length. There is no fixed dua for this. Thank Allah and pray that your Umrah is accepted. Leave the masjid with your left foot first.

  • Leaving the masjid

Bismillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as’aluka min fadlik.

In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be on the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty.

    Sahih Muslim 713

In Madinah: salam to the Prophet ﷺ

Visiting Madinah is not part of Umrah, but almost every group from India goes there. At the Prophet’s ﷺ grave, give salam in a low voice, then to Abu Bakr and ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). A visit to the Rawdah needs a permit on the Nusuk app.

  • At the Prophet’s ﷺ grave

Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
