Key points
- Takbir al-Tashreeq is the takbir said after the fard prayers in the days around Eid al-Adha.
- In the Hanafi school, followed by most Muslims in India, it is said once after every fard prayer from Fajr of 9 Dhul Hijjah to Asr of 13 Dhul Hijjah: 23 prayers in all.
- Men say it aloud; women say it quietly. It is said by everyone, at home or on Hajj, praying alone or in congregation.
- Allah says, “Remember Allah during the appointed days” (2:203). These are the days of tashreeq in Mina.
The words
This is the wording most Muslims in India use. It is reported from companions such as Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA).
Takbir al-Tashreeq
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest, and all praise is for Allah.
Reported from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA)
When it starts and ends
- 1
Step 1
Starts: Fajr of 9 Dhul Hijjah
The Day of Arafah, expected around 15 May 2027 in Saudi Arabia (the date in India follows the local moon).
- 2
Step 2
Every fard prayer
Say it once, right after the salam of each fard prayer, before anything else.
- 3
Step 3
Ends: Asr of 13 Dhul Hijjah
The last day of tashreeq. In all, 23 fard prayers.
This is the timing in the Hanafi school. Other schools have slightly different start and end times and some say it three times. Follow the scholars of your own school.
Who says it
- Every adult Muslim, man or woman, at home or on Hajj
- Whether you pray in congregation or alone
- Men say it aloud, women quietly
- If you forget it right after the prayer, say it as soon as you remember, as long as you have not left the place or spoken much
The takbir in the first ten days
Apart from this takbir after the prayers, it is a sunnah to say the takbir often during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah: at home, in the market, on the way to the Eid prayer. The companions said it on the way from Mina to Arafat (Bukhari 970), and on Eid even women and girls came out and joined the takbir (Bukhari 971).
Allah says, “And mention the name of Allah on known days” (22:28). The days of tashreeq, the Prophet ﷺ said, are days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah (Muslim 1141).
On Hajj
Pilgrims say the talbiyah until they stone Jamrat al-Aqabah on the 10th, and the takbir after the prayers as well. In Mina the takbir fills the camps after every prayer, which is one of the moments pilgrims remember most.
